Brick Repair in Mechanicsburg, PA

Brick Repair · Mechanicsburg, PA

Repairs matched to the brick already on your house

Brick repair starts with finding the cause. A cracked or spalling brick is a symptom, and the right fix depends on what is behind it. Most brick damage traces back to water, frost, settling ground or rusted steel over a window. We track down the source first, then repair the masonry to match what is already there.

Steven Rigg Masonry is a masonry contractor in Mechanicsburg, and repairs are a core part of our work. We handle masonry repair for homes and small commercial buildings across the Harrisburg area. We replace spalled brick, repair cracks, reset loose steps, swap out rusted lintels and fix block and stone walls. When worn mortar joints are the whole problem, tuckpointing is the better fix.

What We Handle

  • Spalled and cracked brick cut out and replaced one brick at a time
  • Replacement brick picked to blend with the range of colors in the wall
  • Loose brick on steps and wall caps reset in fresh mortar
  • Settlement and stair-step cracks repaired after we check whether they still move
  • Rusted steel lintels over windows and doors replaced, with the brick above relaid
  • Brick porch and stoop repairs, including loose treads and settled piers
  • Stone foundation and stone wall repairs, with loose stones reset in mortar
  • Cracked concrete block in foundation and garden walls replaced

Why Does Brick Crack and Spall in the Harrisburg Area?

Water does most of the damage. Brick soaks up rain, and in winter that water freezes inside it. NOAA's 30-year averages for the Harrisburg area show about 100 nights a year at or below freezing. On most of those days, the afternoon warms back above freezing, so the cycle repeats.

Each freeze pushes from inside the brick until the face flakes or pops off. Masons call that spalling, and a federal housing guide says a spalled brick cannot be repaired, only replaced. White salt on the face, called efflorescence, shows water moving through the wall as well.

Cracks have other causes. Ground can settle under a footing, and brick walls swell and shrink a little with the seasons. Chimneys take more weather than most of a house, so they get their own chimney repair page.

Masonry Repair for Cracked Walls and Rusted Lintels

We start with where the water or movement comes from. National Park Service guidance says to fix the root cause first, such as a leaking gutter or settling ground. Without that step, the damage keeps going after the repair.

Damaged brick comes out one piece at a time, and new brick goes in its place. The fresh mortar stays softer than the brick around it. Harder mortar would push the stress into the brick, and that can crack or spall it.

Over windows and doors, a steel lintel holds up the brick. As it rusts, the steel swells and pushes the brick up and out of line. Rust stains near the opening usually point to this. The usual fix is a new lintel, with the brick above it taken down and relaid.

Brick Repair or Rebuild: Which Does Your Wall Need?

Most damage can be repaired in place. A few spalled bricks or a loose step tread is a repair job. Federal standards for historic buildings say worn features should be repaired rather than replaced. Repair keeps the original brick, and it is usually the smaller job.

A rebuild makes sense when the problem runs deeper than the face of the wall. A wall that has bulged or leaned out of line rarely goes fully back. A porch pier split by movement often has to be rebuilt as a whole. Those sections come down and go back up on a sound base, the same way we handle new brick work.

Census estimates put about a third of Mechanicsburg homes at 1939 or earlier. Older towns here also have historic districts, which add a review step. Carlisle's historic district guide says spalling stone steps should be repaired rather than replaced with wood or concrete. If your house sits in one, the borough or city can tell you what the work needs.

FAQ

Brick Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about brick repair around Mechanicsburg and the Harrisburg area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (717) 608-2175

Is a stair-step crack in my brick wall serious?
It depends on whether the crack is still moving. Park Service guidance says many stair-step cracks come from heat and moisture and open and close with the seasons. A federal housing guide adds that a clean crack signals recent movement, while a dirty one may have stopped. If a crack keeps growing, a structural engineer should look at it before we repair it.
Can you match the brick on an older house?
In most cases, a close match is possible. Older walls carry a range of colors and sizes, so we look for brick that blends with the whole wall. Handmade brick on the oldest houses varies the most, so it takes more searching. We tell you how close the match will be before work starts.
Can you repair brick steps instead of replacing them?
Often, yes. Loose brick on a tread can be reset in fresh mortar, and spalled bricks can be swapped out. If the steps have sunk or pulled away from the house, the trouble is usually the base or footing. Then the steps need a rebuild from the footing up, and our walkways and steps page covers that work.
Do I need a permit for brick repair in Pennsylvania?
Under Pennsylvania's construction code, an ordinary repair needs no permit, but cutting into a load-bearing wall is not ordinary. Towns can add rules, and Lebanon's permit guide lists foundation crack repair as permit work. Historic districts in York and Gettysburg require approval for visible exterior work, even when no permit is needed. Your borough or city codes office has the answer for your address.
Should I seal my brick after it is repaired?
In most cases, no. National Park Service guidance says sealers and paints that block moisture speed up decay, because they trap water behind them. Directing water away from the wall and keeping the joints sound does more to slow the damage.
How much does brick repair cost?
It depends on what we find. The price moves with the number of bricks and how hard they are to match. Height matters too, along with any lintel or footing work. We look at the job and put the quote in writing, so call or text (717) 608-2175.
