Grill islands and brick ovens built in masonry

We build masonry outdoor kitchens for homes around Mechanicsburg and the Harrisburg area. Most start with a grill island: a concrete block core with a brick or stone face. A brick pizza oven can sit at one end or on its own base. We have built a brick grill with a pizza oven.

You pick the grill and the other appliances, and we build the masonry to fit them. Other trades run the gas line and wire any outlets. We leave a path into the island for their lines. An outdoor kitchen often sits on a brick or stone patio, near an outdoor fireplace or fire pit.

What We Handle

  • Grill islands with a concrete block core and a brick or stone veneer face
  • Grill cut-outs built to the sizes in your grill's installation manual
  • Vent openings placed where the grill manual calls for them
  • Brick pizza ovens at one end of the island or on their own base
  • Counters of flagstone or other natural stone, set on the masonry
  • Poured concrete footings or pads under the island and the oven
  • Openings sized for the access doors and drawers you pick
  • Drain openings that let rain run out of the island

How do we build a masonry grill island?

A masonry grill island is heavy, so it starts on a poured concrete footing or pad. We lay a concrete block core on that base. The face is brick or stone veneer, picked to suit the house or the patio.

Your grill's installation manual sets the size of each cut-out, and we build the openings to those numbers. Gas grill manuals also call for vent openings in the island in case a gas connection leaks. Propane is heavier than air and settles low, so a propane island needs vents near the floor. Natural gas is lighter and rises, so it needs a vent up near the counter.

Manuals also ask for a countertop that will not burn, and stone on masonry meets that rule. An access door below the grill gives the gas fitter a way in for service.

Brick pizza ovens beside the grill

A brick pizza oven can sit at one end of the grill island or on its own base beside it. The oven is heavy too, so it gets the same kind of poured footing or pad. The space under the oven can hold firewood.

A wood fire burns inside the oven, so the inside has to take high heat. The cooking floor and the dome are firebrick or another heat-rated material, set in mortar made for heat. Plan the oven's spot so its chimney sends smoke away from doors and windows.

Planning your outdoor kitchen layout around Mechanicsburg

Start with the grill's spot. Grill manuals set a clearance from anything that can burn, such as vinyl siding or a wood roof. So the island may need to sit out from the house. Leave counter space on both sides of the grill for platters and tools.

Plan the gas line and any power before the base goes in, since both have to reach inside the island. Pennsylvania 811 warns that utilities may not mark customer-owned lines, and it lists barbecue areas among them. Its website points to private locating services that mark lines you own. If a gas line or yard light wire already runs to the spot, tell us early.

Most winter days around Mechanicsburg freeze at night and thaw by day. NOAA normals for the Capital City Airport station count about 25 January nights at or below freezing. Water that freezes in a joint can crack it, so the counter overhangs the face to drip rain clear. Drain openings at the base let water out of the island.

FAQ

Outdoor Kitchens Questions, Answered

Common questions about outdoor kitchens around Mechanicsburg and the Harrisburg area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (717) 608-2175

How much does an outdoor kitchen cost?
The price follows the size of the island and what goes into it. The face material, the counter, a brick oven, the footing and access to the backyard all move the number. We look at the job and put the quote in writing. Call or text (717) 608-2175 to set up a visit.
Does an outdoor kitchen contractor install the grill and the gas line?
We build the masonry, and the appliances and the gas line belong to other trades. You pick the grill, and a plumber or gas fitter connects it once the island is done. An electrician wires any outlets or lights. We leave openings in the island for their lines.
Can you build an outdoor kitchen on my existing patio?
We look at what is under the patio before we build on it. A masonry island is heavy, and some patio bases are not made to carry it. If the base is thin, part of the patio comes up so the island gets its own footing.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen?
Your borough or township decides, so ask its codes office before work starts. Mechanicsburg Borough, for one, requires zoning permits for accessory structures and for changes to hardscape coverage. Its zoning form also asks owners to check deed covenants and any owners association guidelines. Call 811 three to ten business days before anyone digs for the footing.
What should I have ready before you plan an outdoor kitchen?
Pick the grill first, since its manual sets the cut-out sizes and the vents. A rough sketch of the spot, with the house and its doors marked, helps too. From there we plan the island and write up the quote.
Where do you build outdoor kitchens?
We build them within about 40 miles of Mechanicsburg. That takes in the West Shore, Harrisburg, Carlisle, Hershey, York, Gettysburg and the towns between. Outdoor kitchens are one part of our work as a masonry contractor serving Mechanicsburg and South Central Pennsylvania.

Fastest company to get back to me, as well as educate me on the process behind building up a brick step up to the front door. I found that very beneficial, and added a sense of security and i always stand behind anyone who is that confident in their work, as well as going above and beyond!!!

Efficient, quick, and on time, rain played a factor but these guys didn’t let that affect them, stayed on the timeline they gave me and crushed it, the work speaks for itself
