Concrete Work in Mechanicsburg, PA

Concrete Work · Mechanicsburg, PA

The concrete side of a masonry company

Concrete work at Steven Rigg Masonry starts with the concrete that holds up masonry. That means the footing under a block wall and the pad under an outdoor kitchen or fireplace. As a masonry contractor in Mechanicsburg, we pour that concrete as part of the masonry job. The footing is laid out for the wall it will carry.

We also take on smaller concrete jobs when you ask, like poured steps or a small concrete patio. Concrete repair on steps and walk sections is part of the work too. We work about 40 miles around Mechanicsburg, for homes and small commercial buildings. Call or text (717) 608-2175, and we will look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Concrete Footings and Pads Under Masonry

A brick or block wall needs a concrete footing under it. Block foundation walls for additions and garages stand on one, and so does a mortared retaining wall. Because we build the wall too, the footing is sized and placed for it.

Footings have to ride out our winters. Frost heave is the ground rising as the water in it freezes, and it can lift a shallow footing. When a footing moves, the brick or block on top of it can crack.

Heavy masonry needs a solid base. An outdoor kitchen or a masonry fireplace sits on a level concrete pad or footing. So do brick and stone steps. We pour that base as part of the build.

Poured Steps and Small Concrete Patios, Plus Concrete Repair

Poured concrete steps work well at a back door or a front porch. By NOAA's climate normals, more than 80 days a year here freeze at night and thaw by day. In a climate like ours, the residential code calls for air-entrained concrete on outdoor steps and porches. Tiny air bubbles in that mix give freezing water room to expand.

A small concrete patio sits on a compacted stone base, pitched so water runs away from the house. Much of the valley floor around Mechanicsburg is well-drained limestone soil, but it is silty and clayey below. That is why the pitch leads water away from the slab. For a patio in brick pavers or flagstone, see our brick and stone patios.

Concrete repair makes sense when the ground under a walk or pad is still sound. A walk section that heaved or broke can be cut out and poured again to match the slope around it. Steps built in brick or stone are covered on our walkways and steps page.

Does Concrete Work Need a Permit Around Mechanicsburg?

It depends on the town and the job. Camp Hill wants a zoning permit before any sidewalk repair. The borough does not want heaved panels patched into ramps. The City of York requires a permit to repair or replace a sidewalk.

New pads and slabs add hard surface to a lot, and towns track it. The Borough of Mechanicsburg's zoning form asks for a plot plan and checks the work against the lot coverage limit. York lists concrete pads among the work that takes a zoning permit. Elizabethtown counts every concrete area on a lot, except the public sidewalk, as impervious coverage.

In the City of Lebanon, a footing is inspected after it is dug and formed, before any concrete goes in. Middletown's stormwater rules do not allow concrete washout in a storm drain. Those drains empty untreated into the Swatara Creek or the Susquehanna River. Your town's codes office answers the permit question for your lot, and we can tell you which office to ask.

FAQ

Concrete Work Questions, Answered

Common questions about concrete work around Mechanicsburg and the Harrisburg area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (717) 608-2175

Are you a concrete contractor or a masonry company?
We are a masonry company that also pours concrete. That covers the footings and pads under masonry, plus steps and small patios when you ask. For a larger slab, call or text (717) 608-2175 with the size. We will tell you if it fits our work.
How much does concrete work cost?
The size of the pour drives the price, along with how deep a footing has to go. Removing old concrete adds work, and so does a tight spot that is hard to reach. Any brick or stone that goes on top is part of the price too. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
How deep does a concrete footing go around Mechanicsburg?
A footing usually goes below the frost line, out of reach of frost heave. The residential code also puts exterior footings at least 12 inches below undisturbed ground. The frost line depth is set locally, and we dig to the number your town's codes office uses.
Can a crumbling concrete step be fixed, or does it need replacing?
That depends on what is failing. A chipped edge or a broken corner on a solid step can often be patched. A step that has dropped or tilted has trouble in its base, and a patch will not fix that. We look at the step and tell you which fix it needs.
Will new concrete crack?
Most concrete gets some fine cracks, because it shrinks a little as it dries. Control joints, the grooves cut or tooled into a slab, give those cracks a straight line to follow. A firm base and good curing help keep cracks small.
Should my new steps be poured concrete or brick?
Both kinds stand on concrete. Poured steps are cast in forms as one piece. Brick or stone steps are laid in mortar on a concrete base. The look of the house usually decides, and we can quote either one.

Fastest company to get back to me, as well as educate me on the process behind building up a brick step up to the front door. I found that very beneficial, and added a sense of security and i always stand behind anyone who is that confident in their work, as well as going above and beyond!!!

Efficient, quick, and on time, rain played a factor but these guys didn’t let that affect them, stayed on the timeline they gave me and crushed it, the work speaks for itself
