Brick Paver and Flagstone Patios Built From the Base Up

Steven Rigg Masonry builds brick and stone patios for homes around Mechanicsburg and the Harrisburg area. We lay brick pavers and natural stone, including flagstone. When you compare patio contractors, ask what goes under the pavers. That base, plus the edging, decides how a patio wears through our winters.

We pitch each patio so rain runs away from the house. Pennsylvania's residential code asks hard surfaces within 10 feet of a house to slope at least 2 percent away. Patios are one part of our work as a masonry contractor in Mechanicsburg. We look at the yard, then put the quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • Brick paver patios in herringbone or basket weave patterns
  • Flagstone and natural stone patios, dry-laid or mortared
  • A crushed stone base, compacted and sized to the soil
  • A level sand bed under brick pavers
  • Edging with a straight face along open sides
  • A steady pitch away from the house
  • Joint sand swept in to lock the pavers
  • Sunken brick patios relaid on a new base

Paver Patio Base Prep on Mechanicsburg Soil

Most patio trouble starts under the surface. Water soaks into a thin or soft base and freezes. The ice pushes the pavers up. When it thaws, low spots sink and joints open.

Soil makes a difference. Most of Mechanicsburg sits on Hagerstown silt loam, a soil weathered from limestone with a clay subsoil. The federal soil survey rates its frost heave potential as moderate. Silt and clay hold more water than sand or gravel, so they may need a deeper base and good drainage.

So we dig out the patio area and build a compacted crushed stone base. Trade guidance for a brick patio starts at 4 inches of compacted stone under about an inch of sand. Edging with a straight face holds the outside rows in line.

Brick Patio and Stone Patio Options

A brick patio has straight lines and an even look. Clay pavers usually carry their color all the way through, so a brick patio holds up to fading. For a patio here, pick a clay paver graded for freezing while wet. Herringbone and basket weave are popular patterns, and herringbone resists shifting best.

A stone patio has a looser, more natural look. Flagstone comes as irregular pieces or cut rectangles, and its joints run wider than brick joints. Trade guidance puts outdoor stone pavers for foot traffic at an inch and a quarter thick or more.

A patio often meets a walkway and steps to the door, and we build those to match. We leave the planting beds around the patio to you or a landscaper.

Do You Need a Permit for a Patio Around Mechanicsburg?

Often, yes, and each borough or township sets its own rules. The Borough of Mechanicsburg asks for a zoning permit when the hardscape coverage on a lot changes. Carlisle, Hanover, Lebanon, Elizabethtown and York all name patios in their permit rules. Ask your codes office early, and check any homeowners association rules too.

Patios also count toward stormwater limits. Hanover's zoning rules count a patio as impervious, or hard, surface. Camp Hill asks for a minor stormwater permit once new hard surfaces on a lot pass 500 square feet. Middletown requires stormwater controls for projects that add 1,000 square feet or more of hard surface.

Digging has its own rule. Pennsylvania law says anyone digging with power equipment must call 811 three to ten business days ahead. Utilities may not mark lines you own, like yard lighting or a buried pet fence. Show us where those run.

FAQ

Patios Questions, Answered

Common questions about patios around Mechanicsburg and the Harrisburg area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (717) 608-2175

How much does a brick or stone patio cost?
Size and material set most of the price. The soil decides how deep the base goes, and a slope or a tight backyard adds labor. Patterns with many cuts take longer to lay. Call or text (717) 608-2175, and we will look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Can you fix an old brick patio that has sunk?
Often, yes. If the pavers are sound, they can be lifted and relaid on a rebuilt base. Pavers that are cracked or spalling may be worth replacing. We look at it and put our advice in the written quote.
Should flagstone be set in sand or in mortar?
Both work when the base is right. Dry-laid flagstone sits on compacted stone and a sand bed, so water drains down through the joints. Mortared flagstone sits on a concrete slab, so water runs off the top. We look at the yard and the stone, then recommend one in the written quote.
Do you build concrete patios too?
Yes, small poured patios are part of our concrete work. If you want the look of masonry instead, brick pavers or flagstone can cover the same footprint.
Can you add a fire pit or an outdoor kitchen to the patio?
Yes. A patio is often the floor for an outdoor fireplace or fire pit or an outdoor kitchen. Planning them together lets their footings go in before the pavers do.
Does a paver patio need upkeep?
A little. Joint sand can wash out over time. Full joints keep pavers tight, so top them up when they run low. When you clear snow, go easy on the paver edges, since a hard scrape can chip them.
