Natural stone walls and stone veneer around Mechanicsburg

Steven Rigg Masonry does stone masonry for homes and small commercial buildings around Mechanicsburg. We build natural stone walls and set stone veneer on foundations and facades. Stone is one part of what we do as a Mechanicsburg masonry contractor, along with brick and block.

A new stone wall or facade starts with one choice: full-depth natural stone, or stone veneer over a backing wall. We look at the job first, then put the quote in writing. We take stone masonry work across the West Shore and out to York and Gettysburg, about 40 miles around Mechanicsburg.

What We Handle

  • Freestanding stone walls and garden walls on footings below the frost line
  • Natural stone such as limestone and fieldstone
  • Stone veneer on exposed block and concrete foundations
  • Stone veneer facades on houses and small commercial buildings
  • Stone veneer on chimney rebuilds above the roofline
  • New stone chosen to sit beside older stone walls

Stone Walls and the Limestone of the Cumberland Valley

The Cumberland Valley sits on limestone, and early builders here used it. A Cumberland County planning report counts 292 stone barns in the county in 1840. It notes the eastern valley, where Mechanicsburg sits, was once nearly a solid run of stone barns. Many were bank barns of native limestone.

The Borough of Carlisle's historic district guide describes local limestone as light gray to blue-gray, sometimes yellowish. It is hard to cut, but it splits along natural planes. Those breaks give a stone mason flat faces for the outside of a wall.

We build freestanding stone walls in natural stone such as limestone and fieldstone. Each one gets a concrete footing set below the frost line. Before the digging, Pennsylvania 811 asks for a call three to ten business days ahead. Walls that retain soil need a different design, and our page on stone retaining walls covers them.

What Goes Into a Stone Veneer Installation?

Stone veneer is a face of stone set against a solid wall behind it. Thin stone is adhered, set in a bed of mortar on a prepared surface. Thicker stone is anchored, held to the wall with metal ties set in the mortar joints.

On a block or concrete foundation, we check that the wall is sound and clean before stone goes on. A framed wall needs more. Pennsylvania's 2021 residential code calls for a water barrier behind the veneer and flashing at its base. It also sets adhered veneer at least 4 inches above soil and 2 inches above paving.

Chimneys can take stone veneer as well. We have set it as part of a chimney rebuild from the roofline. Our page on chimney repair and rebuilds covers the rest of that work.

Stone Masonry on Older Homes Around Mechanicsburg

In Carlisle's old stone buildings, the guide puts the common wall thickness at 16 inches. Wide stones called headers run through the wall at regular intervals. From outside, a plain face stone might be a 300 pound header. Early mortar was sand and lime, and gravity did most of the holding.

That is why we look closely at an old wall before tying new stone into it. We look for new stone close in color and size. Crumbling joints in an old stone foundation call for tuckpointing and repointing. Loose or cracked stones fall under masonry repair.

Historic districts add one more step for stone on an old facade. In Mechanicsburg's historic areas, new work on the outside of a building gets an extra level of review. Carlisle's guide says stone and brick buildings there shall not be covered with artificial stone. Ask the borough before any veneer goes up.

FAQ

Stone Masonry Questions, Answered

Common questions about stone masonry around Mechanicsburg and the Harrisburg area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (717) 608-2175

How much does stone masonry cost?
The stone and the wall drive the price. Full-depth natural stone and stone veneer price differently, and footing or backing work adds to it. Size, height, access and the cutting each stone needs all move the number. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Should I choose natural stone or stone veneer?
Full-depth natural stone suits a freestanding wall, because the stone is the wall. It is heavy and needs a solid footing. Stone veneer is a face over a backing wall, so it fits foundations and chimneys. We look at what the wall has to do and talk through both.
Are there rules for building a stone wall?
Yes, and they change from town to town. Camp Hill, for one, holds fences and walls on residential lots to 6 feet along side and rear lot lines. It also sets them at least one foot back from a sidewalk or right-of-way. Your borough or township decides, and we tell you what to ask.
Should I seal or power wash old stone?
Go gentle. The Borough of Carlisle's historic district guide says to try low-pressure water with a mild detergent first. It says high-pressure power washing is not appropriate for limestone and sandstone. It also warns that sealers can trap moisture and make the stone face spall.
Will frost damage a stone wall?
Water in an open joint swells as it freezes and pushes stones apart. Wet soil under a wall can also heave when it freezes. That is why a freestanding stone wall goes on a footing below the frost line. Tight joints and a sound cap on top shed water.
Do you work outside Mechanicsburg?
Yes. Our stone masonry work reaches about 40 miles around Mechanicsburg. That covers Harrisburg, Carlisle, York, Hershey, Lebanon and Gettysburg, plus the towns between. Call or text (717) 608-2175 with the job and the town.

Fastest company to get back to me, as well as educate me on the process behind building up a brick step up to the front door. I found that very beneficial, and added a sense of security and i always stand behind anyone who is that confident in their work, as well as going above and beyond!!!
