Census figures show the median home in the City of Lebanon was built in 1947. About 4 in 10 went up before 1940, nearly twice the share for Lebanon County. On brick and stone that old, the mortar joints give out first. Winter water then freezes in the open joints and pushes brick loose.
Steven Rigg Masonry works as a masonry contractor in Lebanon, part of our service area around Mechanicsburg. We build and repair brick, block and stone for homes and small commercial buildings. For older brick, that includes tuckpointing worn mortar joints and chimney repair from the roofline up. Call or text (717) 608-2175, and we look at the job, then put the quote in writing.
Tell us about the chimney, wall, steps or patio and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Lebanon began in 1756 as Steitztown, laid out on land along Quittapahilla Creek. The Lebanon Valley Conservancy's heritage trail guide lists Light's Fort, a limestone building from about 1742, as the city's oldest. Red sandstone and brick buildings followed through the 1800s and into the 1930s.
US 422 runs through the center of the city on the route of the 1817 Harrisburg and Reading Turnpike. The railroad came through in 1858, and by the 1920s the North Side was growing fast. Nearly 9 in 10 city homes were built before 1980. About a third are attached row homes and twins, roughly as many as detached houses.
Brick and stone from those years were often laid in soft mortar rich in lime. National Park Service repointing guidance says new mortar must be softer than the brick or stone it holds. A hard modern mix can crack and spall old brick, so we match the mortar to the wall.
Most of the city sits on the limestone floor of the Lebanon Valley. The federal soil survey maps most of it as Hagerstown silt loam, much of that under pavement and buildings. That soil formed from limestone, and the survey rates its potential for frost heave as moderate. Weather stations around Harrisburg average roughly 80 to 100 days a year that freeze at night and thaw by day.
Lebanon County's 2007 natural resources plan says the valley's carbonate rock lends itself to sinkholes. The state geological survey explains that moving water can flush soil out of openings in limestone. The same plan puts average precipitation at 44 inches a year. So we plan where roof and patio water goes.
Retaining walls here get footings below the frost line and drainage behind the wall, so water has a way out. If the ground ever shows settling or a hole, an engineer should look before anything is built. Before anyone digs, Pennsylvania 811 asks for a call three to ten business days ahead.
The City of Lebanon's Public Works Department runs a Building and Zoning Division. It asks owners to call before any project starts. The city's quick reference guide lists a new patio and any retaining wall as permit work. Under the state code alone, most retaining walls up to 4 feet would need none.
The guide also lists foundation crack repair and new or repaired egress stairs as permit work. Ask the division whether your front steps count. The guide's no-permit list includes repairing an existing patio at the same size, under 30 inches above grade.
On permitted work, the city inspects a footing after it is dug and formed, before concrete goes in. A masonry foundation wall gets its inspection before backfill. We tell you what to ask, then plan the work around any inspection.
The city's Grow Lebanon plan lists broken brick pavers and sidewalks among the ongoing issues downtown. It notes that much of that upkeep falls to individual property owners.
On the city's permit form, replacing a private sidewalk at the same size is exempt. Adding or widening sidewalk area is on the guide's permit list. The difference matters when a front walk gets rebuilt.
We rebuild front walks and steps in brick and stone. Steps get footings below the frost line, and walks get a compacted stone base. Where a step or landing needs concrete, we pour that part too.

Fastest company to get back to me, as well as educate me on the process behind building up a brick step up to the front door. I found that very beneficial, and added a sense of security and i always stand behind anyone who is that confident in their work, as well as going above and beyond!!!
Efficient, quick, and on time, rain played a factor but these guys didn’t let that affect them, stayed on the timeline they gave me and crushed it, the work speaks for itself
Steven got us scheduled very quickly and gave us a quote! He was very honest about the work we needed done and pointed us in the right direction for how it should be done. The finished project looked great! We would definitely recommend Steven and are very happy with his work. Thank you Steven!
