Steven Rigg Masonry builds block walls for homes in Mechanicsburg and the towns within about 40 miles. We lay concrete block for foundation and basement walls under additions and garages. We also build freestanding garden walls, and we repair block walls that have cracked.
Block masonry is one part of our work as a masonry contractor serving Mechanicsburg, along with brick and stone. A new block wall starts on a concrete footing set below the frost line. We can pour that footing as part of our concrete work, then lay the block on it in mortar. Call or text (717) 608-2175, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Tell us about the chimney, wall, steps or patio and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
A block foundation carries the weight of an addition or a garage down to its footing. The block goes up in mortar, one course at a time, to the height on the plans. Above the ground, it can take a face of stone veneer or brick to match the house.
Once an addition has its building permit, Pennsylvania's code calls for a foundation inspection. The work stays open and exposed for the code official until that inspection. In the City of Lebanon, that inspection comes before backfill and before any framing.
Builders with an addition or a garage on the schedule can call or text with the plans. We quote the block work in writing.
In many cases, yes. When a wall has not moved, cracked or broken block can be cut out and replaced in fresh mortar. Loose or crumbling joints between sound blocks are a job for tuckpointing.
A wall that bows or leans is a different problem. Have a structural engineer look at it before any repair, because the engineer's plan sets the fix. When that plan calls for a rebuilt section, we lay the new block.
Pennsylvania's code says an ordinary repair needs no building permit. Cutting away part of a load-bearing wall is not an ordinary repair. Local rules can add more, and Lebanon's city permit guide lists foundation crack repair as permit work.
Winters around Mechanicsburg freeze and thaw over and over. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Harrisburg area count about 100 nights a year at or below freezing. On most of those days, the air warms back above freezing.
Water in wet soil swells as it freezes, and it can lift a footing that sits too shallow. That is why a garden wall's footing goes below the frost line, the same as a foundation's. The residential code leaves that depth for each local code office to fill in, so ask yours for the number.
A freestanding garden wall gets a cap that sheds rain away from its face. Some towns also set rules for how a block wall looks. In Camp Hill, borough rules call for a freestanding block wall to be painted or decorative on each outward side. A wall that holds back soil on a slope is a different build, and our retaining walls page covers it.

Repairs start with grinding out failed mortar or taking down loose brick. New work starts at the footing or the base, and then we lay the masonry on it. Mortar work follows the weather.

Fastest company to get back to me, as well as educate me on the process behind building up a brick step up to the front door. I found that very beneficial, and added a sense of security and i always stand behind anyone who is that confident in their work, as well as going above and beyond!!!
Efficient, quick, and on time, rain played a factor but these guys didn’t let that affect them, stayed on the timeline they gave me and crushed it, the work speaks for itself
Steven got us scheduled very quickly and gave us a quote! He was very honest about the work we needed done and pointed us in the right direction for how it should be done. The finished project looked great! We would definitely recommend Steven and are very happy with his work. Thank you Steven!
