Outdoor Fireplaces and Fire Pits in Mechanicsburg, PA

A fire to gather around, built in brick and stone

An outdoor fireplace keeps people out on the patio long after dark. As a masonry contractor serving Mechanicsburg, we build outdoor fireplaces and masonry fire pits in brick and stone. We build a stone fireplace as a concrete block core on a concrete footing, faced with stone veneer. Seat walls around a fire pit give the whole group a place to sit.

Tell us where you want the fire and how many people should fit around it. We look at the ground under the spot and its distance from the house, then put the quote in writing. We also build brick and stone patios, so the fire and the patio can be planned together. Call or text (717) 608-2175 to set up a visit.

  • Fireplaces and fire pits planned with a new or existing patio

Stone fireplace or brick fireplace: which suits your house?

Both kinds sit on a concrete footing, and both hold the fire in a firebox lined with firebrick. The face is the part you see every day, so the choice comes down to the house and the yard.

A stone fireplace has a block core with natural stone or stone veneer set in mortar over it. Stone suits a house with a stone foundation or a stone wall already on the lot. We set the same veneer on house walls and chimneys in our stone masonry work.

A brick fireplace suits a brick house or a brick patio. We help you pick a brick and a mortar color that sit well beside what is already there.

Fire pit installation with seat walls

A masonry fire pit is a low ring or square of brick or stone on a solid, compacted base. It sits open on every side, so the group gathers in a circle. The outer face can match the patio or the house.

Seat walls are low masonry walls at about chair height. They can curve around the fire pit or run along the edge of the patio. On a sloped yard, a seat wall can also hold back the soil at the patio edge.

Pennsylvania law calls for an 811 locate request three to ten business days before digging starts. Utility companies may not mark lines you own, such as yard lighting or a line to a barbecue area. Tell us where those run before the footing goes in.

Burn rules and clearances around Mechanicsburg

Burn rules change from one town to the next, so check yours before you pick a spot. Inside Mechanicsburg Borough, code section 20-201 bans outdoor fires, with an exception for cooking food. A cooking fire there must stay in a fire ring, a fireplace, a grill or a similar fireproof container.

Hampden Township, one of the townships around the borough, requires a burn permit for a recreational fire. That fire must sit at least 25 feet from a structure or anything that can burn. Hanover Borough's fire rules use the same 25 feet. They keep an outdoor fireplace, built-in or portable, at least 15 feet away.

Both towns require someone to tend the fire until it is out, with a hose or an extinguisher close by. Your borough or township office has the rule for your lot, so ask before the work starts. We plan the spot around that answer, clear of the house and low branches.

FAQ

Outdoor Fireplaces Questions, Answered

Common questions about outdoor fireplaces around Mechanicsburg and the Harrisburg area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

What is the difference between a fire pit and an outdoor fireplace?
A fire pit sits low and open, so people gather all the way around it. An outdoor fireplace has a firebox and a chimney that draws smoke up and away from the seats. It takes more room and more masonry, and it sends its heat out the front. Either one can sit beside an outdoor kitchen on the same patio.
Does an outdoor fireplace need a footing?
Yes. A masonry fireplace is heavy, so we set it on a concrete footing below the frost line. The footing sits under the layer of soil that freezes and heaves in winter. A fire pit weighs less, so a solid, compacted base often does the job.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor fireplace?
Ask your borough or township before work starts. Mechanicsburg Borough requires a zoning permit for accessory structures and for changes to the hardscape coverage on a lot. Its Codes and Zoning Department staff can tell you whether your project needs one. We tell you what to ask, and the office gives the answer.
Can you add a fire pit to my existing patio?
It depends on what is under the patio. A masonry fire pit adds real weight, so it needs a solid base. We check the base and the distance to the house before we plan anything on top. If the base is thin, a section of the patio may come up so the pit gets its own footing.
Will freeze-thaw winters crack an outdoor fireplace?
They can if water gets into the masonry. Water soaks into open mortar joints, then freezes and pushes them apart. Tight joints and a crown or cap that sheds rain keep most of that water out. When an older fireplace shows open joints, tuckpointing closes them before the damage spreads.
How much does an outdoor fireplace cost?
The size of the fireplace and the height of its chimney drive the price most. Natural stone and brick also price differently. Seat walls add to it, and so does a long carry from the driveway to the backyard. Call or text (717) 608-2175, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Fastest company to get back to me, as well as educate me on the process behind building up a brick step up to the front door. I found that very beneficial, and added a sense of security and i always stand behind anyone who is that confident in their work, as well as going above and beyond!!!

Efficient, quick, and on time, rain played a factor but these guys didn’t let that affect them, stayed on the timeline they gave me and crushed it, the work speaks for itself
