Brick, Block, Stone and Concrete Work in Camp Hill

Camp Hill was incorporated in 1885, and about two in three of its homes were built before 1960. On houses that age, mortar joints wear thin and chimney crowns crack. Front steps settle and pull away from the house. And when a street lands in the borough's paving area, owners along it can get a sidewalk and curb notice.

Steven Rigg Masonry is a masonry contractor in Camp Hill, and the borough is part of our service area. We do tuckpointing on old brick and stone, and we build new brick, block, stone and concrete work. We look at the job first, then put the quote in writing. Call or text (717) 608-2175.

How Old Are the Homes in Camp Hill?

Camp Hill covers 2.1 square miles on the West Shore, home to about 8,100 people at the 2020 Census. Census Bureau estimates for 2020 to 2024 put the median year built at 1953. Across Cumberland County, the median is 1978. About one in four borough homes went up before 1940, and more than nine in ten before 1980.

Most of that housing is single-family. About three in four Camp Hill homes are detached houses, against about six in ten across the county. A detached house has its own foundation walls and steps to keep up.

Most of this masonry has stood through more than 60 winters. Water gets into worn joints and freezes, and the ice pushes the joint apart. Brick faces start to flake, and the top of a chimney takes the worst of the weather. When a chimney is too far gone for repointing, chimney repair can mean a rebuild from the roofline.

Older brick also needs the right mortar. A hard modern mix on soft old brick can make the brick faces spall. We match new mortar to the old brick and the old joints.

What Camp Hill's Soil and Winters Do to Masonry

NRCS soil maps show two main kinds of ground under Camp Hill. More than half the borough sits on soils formed from shale, mostly the Bedington and Berks series. About a third sits on Hagerstown and Duffield silt loams, formed from limestone.

Berks soils are moderately deep, with bedrock at 20 to 40 inches, so a footing trench there can reach shale. Hagerstown soils turn to silty clay and clay below the surface. Water has to be led away from footings and walls there. NRCS rates the main soils here as moderate for frost action.

NOAA keeps 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Capital City Airport station, a few miles away. They count about 100 nights a year at or below freezing. Only about 17 days a year stay below freezing all day. So water in a cracked joint freezes at night and thaws by day, over and over.

That cycle is why we set footings below the frost line and pack base stone under front steps and walks. Nearly a quarter of the borough's mapped soils lie on slopes of 8 percent or more. On a slope, retaining walls need drainage stone and an outlet behind them. On limestone ground, where roof and patio water goes matters too.

Camp Hill Borough Rules for Walls and Sidewalks

Camp Hill's Codes Enforcement and Zoning office reviews permits for the borough. A zoning permit comes before building or rebuilding any structure, and the borough lists fences and driveways among them. Sidewalk and curb repairs need a zoning permit first too. In 2024 the borough began new curb and sidewalks on Market Street, from 20th to 25th Street.

Fences and walls must sit at least one foot back from a sidewalk or right-of-way. On a residential lot, they top out at 6 feet along side and rear lot lines. Lower limits apply nearer the street and on corner lots. Brick can form the posts or the base, as long as the fence or wall stays within its height limit.

Two more rules touch masonry. A concrete block wall must be decorative on every side that faces outward, and paint counts. Engineered retaining walls that hold back a slope are exempt from those height rules.

The borough adds up new area over time, such as a deck one year and an addition the next. Once a property passes 500 square feet, a minor stormwater permit is required. Ask the codes office whether a new patio or walk counts toward that total. Structural work also needs a building permit, and the borough says residential plan review can take up to 15 days.

Fastest company to get back to me, as well as educate me on the process behind building up a brick step up to the front door. I found that very beneficial, and added a sense of security and i always stand behind anyone who is that confident in their work, as well as going above and beyond!!!

Efficient, quick, and on time, rain played a factor but these guys didn’t let that affect them, stayed on the timeline they gave me and crushed it, the work speaks for itself

Questions We Hear Around Camp Hill

A few of the questions we hear most around Camp Hill. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (717) 608-2175

Do I need a permit for masonry work in Camp Hill?
It depends on the job. The borough wants a zoning permit before building or rebuilding a structure, and structural work also needs a building permit. Under the state code, an ordinary repair does not need a building permit. Ask the borough's codes office before work starts; the borough decides, and we tell you what to ask.
The borough sent me a sidewalk notice. What comes first?
A zoning permit comes first, and it checks the repair against the borough's specs, including slope. Camp Hill sends these notices to owners in a paving area, or after a complaint names the address. The borough says skimming mortar over a heaved panel to make a ramp is not approvable. We pour replacement walk sections as part of our concrete work.
What does masonry work cost on an older Camp Hill home?
It depends on the job. Height and access matter on chimneys and tall walls, and so does how much old masonry comes out. Matching mortar to older, softer brick takes extra care. We look at the job first, then put the quote in writing.
Why do front steps pull away from older Camp Hill houses?
Front steps often sit on their own footing, apart from the house. If that footing is shallow, frost and wet soil can move it, and a gap opens. Each winter the ground freezes and thaws under the step, and the gap grows. The usual fix is a rebuild on a footing below the frost line.
When should I schedule masonry work in Camp Hill?
Fresh mortar and concrete should not freeze while they cure. At the Capital City Airport station, NOAA's normals put the median last spring freeze on April 9. The median first fall freeze comes on November 1. Call or text (717) 608-2175 to plan the timing for your job.
