Elizabethtown's homes run older than Lancaster County's as a whole. The median home here dates to 1964, while the county median is 1978. On houses that age, mortar joints wear thin and front steps pull away from the porch. The borough also makes the sidewalk and curb out front the property owner's job.

Thomas Harris set up a trading post on Conoy Creek in 1730. Barnabas Hughes bought it in 1753 and laid out a town named for his wife. Market Street and High Street still carry the names he gave them. Elizabethtown became a borough on April 13, 1827, and turns 200 in 2027.
Census figures show about one home in four here was built before 1940. Across Lancaster County, that share is under 20 percent. About 7 in 10 Elizabethtown homes were built before 1980. About one in five is attached, such as a twin or a rowhouse.
On older, softer brick, a strong portland cement mortar can do harm. The two expand and harden at different rates, and the softer brick spalls and chips. Tuckpointing on homes this age starts with matching the old mortar. Mortar changes color as it cures, so a match is judged after it cures.
The ground here differs from the limestone soil of the Cumberland Valley around Mechanicsburg. Elizabethtown sits on the red sandstone and shale of the Triassic lowland. The federal soil survey maps much of the borough as Lansdale and Ungers loams. Both are rated well drained, with a moderate potential for frost heave.
Low ground along the creeks is different. There the survey maps Bowmansville silt loam, rated somewhat poorly drained with a high frost heave potential. A patio base or a wall footing on wet ground needs more drainage stone. The borough posts a floodplain map, and FEMA's Flood Map Service Center looks up any address.
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Harrisburg International Airport count about 100 nights a year at or below freezing. Only about 19 days stay below freezing all day, so most freezing days warm back above 32 degrees. Each cycle lets water into joints, where it freezes and pushes them wider. Footings for steps and retaining walls go below the frost line, under the ground that freezes.
Yes, for a patio or a retaining wall of any height. Elizabethtown uses one residential permit form for borough zoning and the state's Uniform Construction Code. Its permit list names patios and retaining walls under 4 feet. Sidewalk installation and new fences are on it too.
Retaining walls over 4 feet need a UCC building permit as well. So do structural changes, and the form names stairs and exterior steps among them. A new brick and stone patio also needs a plot plan, and patios count toward the lot's impervious coverage.
Whoever signs the form also agrees to keep structures out of drainage and utility easements. If you are unsure about a job, the borough's Building Code Official answers that question, and we point you there. Pennsylvania law also requires a call to 811 three to ten business days before digging.
Market Street and High Street cross at the center of town. Market Street carries PA 230 through the borough, and PA 743 heads north toward Hershey as Hershey Road. PA 283 curves past the north and east sides of town.
The Elizabethtown College campus is inside the borough. Part of the Masonic Village campus sits beside the train station, a stop on the Keystone Corridor. Community Park is in the heart of the borough, and Hickory Lane Park runs along Conoy Creek.
The borough covers about 2.6 square miles and counted 11,639 people in the 2020 Census. The Census Bureau estimates about 11,960 for 2025. We take masonry jobs across the borough and the townships around it.

Fastest company to get back to me, as well as educate me on the process behind building up a brick step up to the front door. I found that very beneficial, and added a sense of security and i always stand behind anyone who is that confident in their work, as well as going above and beyond!!!
Efficient, quick, and on time, rain played a factor but these guys didn’t let that affect them, stayed on the timeline they gave me and crushed it, the work speaks for itself
Steven got us scheduled very quickly and gave us a quote! He was very honest about the work we needed done and pointed us in the right direction for how it should be done. The finished project looked great! We would definitely recommend Steven and are very happy with his work. Thank you Steven!
